CVRep’s production of HAVING OUR SAY The Delaney Sisters’ First 100 Years by Emily Mann, adapted from the book Having Our Say by Sarah L. and A. Elizabeth Delaney with Amy Hill Hearth, will run from January 21 through February 8, 2015 with rehearsals starting the week of January 5th.
The play opens as 103 year old Sadie and 101 year old Bessie welcome us into their Mount Vernon, NY home. While preparing a celebratory dinner in remembrance of their father’s birthday, they take us on a remarkable journey through the last hundred years of our nation’s history, recounting a fascinating series of events and amusing anecdotes drawn from their rich family history and careers as pioneering African-American professionals.
Directed by Ron Celona
Seeking the following roles:
MISS SADIE DELANEY – a 103 year old African-American woman, a retired high school teacher. She has a sweet disposition but gets her point expressed clearly.
DR. BESSIE DELANEY – a 101 year old African-American woman, a retired dentist. She has a bite to her personality and is more outspoken.
The two sisters are the daughters of a minister born in slavery and a brilliant woman of mixed ancestry.
The sisters often finish each other’s sentences, speak in unison, echo each other’s thoughts and gestures. After one hundred years of living together, they are, as sadie says, “in some ways, like one person.”
Actors should prepare a 2-3 minute monologue of their choice
