This season’s Youth Outreach Production is POWER PLAY.
Directed by Howard Shangraw
Drama, 1 Act
A gunshot is heard. Which of the five characters did it and why? Was it the Goth girl? The football star? The super-intelligent geek? Power Play explores the realities and the stereotypes of high school violence – not just the brutal shock of the school shooting, but also verbal harassment and bullying.
Violence is about power. So is high school. The overall theme of this one act play is the idea of violence. What is violence? How do you recognize violence? Is violence only physical? These are just a few of the mind-boggling questions that are asked of the audience throughout the performance as you and the characters all try to understand the complexity of violence.
This play has absurd moments, vivid characterization, and a powerful message: school violence happens everyday and as the title suggests, it’s all about power. It’s a topic that needs to be talked about, and theatre is a great way to initiate that conversation. CVRep is proud to continue our Bully Play Series with this important and timely production of POWER PLAY for National Anti-Bullying Month.
Performed by Coachella Valley area high school students.
Production Information
Performance dates: October 7 – 10, 2025
It has always been a priority of CVRep to present an annual production for Coachella Valley students that is culturally and socially relevant in today’s complicated world. Over the past ten years we have performed for close to 14,000 students, free of charge, to experience live theatre, some for the first time. CVRep not only provides the performance to the children for free, but will also pay for the buses to bring the school students to the theatre.
At the end of each performance, a Q&A is conducted, where the audience could discuss what they experienced as well as ask questions. This process opens up a dialogue to continue a conversation long after leaving the theatre.
If you represent a school and would like more information and / or to schedule your students for a performance, please contact Howard Shangraw at HShangraw@cvrep.org.
CVRep’s Annual Youth Outreach Program is possible because of the generous support by The Auen Foundation,The Anderson Children’s Foundation, and Robert McClesky and Lori Daigle.
